When Jeremiah Left a Message in the Euphrates River

There is a message that Jeremiah stored in a jar with a weight and dropped in the great river Euphrates. To be read when the river dried up. So Cyrus could read it and so we can read it when the prophecy of Revelation is ready to be understood.

There is a little known scripture in Jeremiah. It had great importance when king Cyrus of Persia conquered Babylon in 538 BC. And it is of great importance today as Revelation speaks once again of the fall of Babylon.

How Babylon the impregnable great city fell in 539 BC says a lot about how modern day Babylon the Great is falling all around us.

I want to give you a critical insight from the prophecy of Jeremiah that enlightens for us today as the world order is rapidly falling apart.

Jeremiah

This prophet was the last great prophet to the kings of Judah before the kingdom of Judah fell to the army of king Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.  This was 70 years before king Cyrus came on the scene.
Jeremiah tried to warn Judah repent. He warned them Babylon is coming sent by the Lord to punish the Israelites of Judah. He told them don't fight for you will only be captive for 70 years. You will return.  They did not listen. They rebelled. First captives in 604 BC. Then the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 586 BC.

But Jeremiah has another word from the Lord and this time for Babylon. He asked his servant Seraiah to go to Babylon, write down the words of the prophecy read the words of the prophecy out over Babylon and to write this prophecy down and then bind it and place it in a container and then tie a rope and rock around it and cast it into the middle of the Euphrates river.

Jer 51:63  And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates:

Jer 51:64  And thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

You need to understand historically how Babylon fell to king Cyrus to understand why this action of Jeremiah was critical. And then when you understand the history of the fall of Babylon then it will give you a new perspective on what the Book of Revelation is telling us about the Fall of Babylon the Great (Rev. 17) and the drying of the river Euphrates in Rev. 9:14 and Rev. 16:12. And it is important you understand what Jeremiah wrote buried in the river Euphrates, and the modern day falling of the world Babylon system through the drying up of the river Euphrates. And what it means for the church in this critical time.

Historical Context: The Fall of Ancient Babylon (539 BC)

According to ancient historians such as Herodotus (Histories, Book I) and Xenophon, Babylon was considered virtually impregnable due to its massive fortifications and the Euphrates River, which flowed directly beneath its outer walls, providing both a formidable moat and an uninterrupted water supply.

Diverting the Waters: In 539 BC, King Cyrus the Great of the Medo-Persian Empire besieged Babylon. Rather than attempting a frontal assault on the walls, Persian engineers dug channels or diverted the flow of the Euphrates upstream into a marsh or basin.

The Dry Riverbed: Once the water level dropped sufficiently, Cyrus’s soldiers marched along the exposed riverbed under the city gates.

Overnight Capture: The city was taken by surprise during a night of revelry (paralleling the biblical account of Belshazzar’s feast in Daniel 5

According to legends when Cyrus army crossed the dry river bed of the Euphrates they found the prophecy of Jeremiah of the fall of Babylon and God's judgment on Babylon 70 years before. This was a critical reason along with the prophecies of Isaiah about Cyrus gave Cyrus the encouragement to release the Jewish captives and allow them to rebuild Jerusalem and the Temple.

Now move forward to the prophecies of Revelation about the fall of Babylon the Great and the drying of the river Euphrates.

I remember all the excitement back in the days of Saddam Hussein dictator of Iraq back in 1991 when news came that Saddam was going to rebuild Babylon and then news of drought and the drying up of the river Euphrates. A sure exciting time that "end time prophecies of Revelation" are now being fulfilled.  The rapture any day now!.

Let me give you a different interpretation of applying the historical fall of Babylon and the drying up of the Euphrates to our modern day world events.

Lets look at the relevant scriptres in Revelation and apply them in the world context today....and also look at how the message of Jeremiah can be found when the waters of the Euphrates dry up to reveal the destiny of Babylon the Great.

Babylon the Great Harlot

The primary scripture that details Babylon the Great Harlot ruling over the nations is Revelation 17.

Revelation 17:1–2 introduces her: "Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits by many waters. With her the kings of the earth committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries."

Revelation 17:5 states her title: "The name written on her forehead was a mystery: Babylon the great, the mother of prostitutes and of the abominations of the earth."

Revelation 17:15 clarifies her global rule: "The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages."

Revelation 17:18 explicitly confirms her authority: "The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth."

  • First let me define for you what the word 'Babylon" means. It comes from the Akkadian word Bāb-ilim (or Bāb-ilu) Bāb means "gate". Ilim (or Ilu) means "god" or "gods

For perspective: This is what Jesus was referring to His "I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it". meaning the church will crush "Babylon the Great.

Now let me tell you what the word Euphrates means. Ephrata means "to be fruitful". Because the river flooded annually and made the entire Mesopotamian valley incredibly wealthy and fertile, the Greeks connected the name to their own concepts of abundance, fertility, and liquid gushing forth

Here is what Revelation says about the river Euphrates:
In Rev. 16:12 the river Euphrates is dried up to make way for the kings of the east and in Rev. 9:14 refers to the release of powerful angels when the river dries prior to the judgment of Babylon the Great in Rev. 17&18.

I will identify for you our modern day Babylon and the river of abundance flowing through it that keeps people enthralled and captive. But first the forgotten message of Jeremiah that the world will only read when the great river of abundance dries up.

Jer 51:25  Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the LORD, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain.

Jer 51:53  Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet from me shall spoilers come unto her, saith the LORD.

Jer 51:54  A sound of a cry cometh from Babylon, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans:

Jer 51:60  So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.

Jer 51:61  And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When thou comest to Babylon, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words;

Jer 51:62  Then shalt thou say, O LORD, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off, that none shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but that it shall be desolate for ever.

I want you to notice in the prophecy that was spoken over Babylon that has not yet come to pass...."it shall be desolate forever."  Babylon remained a great city long after Jeremiah, Cyrus, Alexander. It is still around when John wrote his Revelation as "Mystery Babylon". It is not desolate yet!

Babylon and Euphrates

So get this picture in your mind.  There is a river of abundance and fertility and prosperity that flows through the city that is the gateway to the gods that protects the city from assault and attracts people to her abundance and prosperity.

Here is what I see of the modern world of Mystery Babylon.

The "mystery" of modern day Babylon is often spoken of as :the deep state". Why is it that the more we vote nothing ever changes. The same mysterious forces keeps the corrupt world system working.

I see two great rivers that flow through the world that creates abundance and prosperity.
Money and energy.  Credit and fossil fuels. They must flow or Babylon falls.

People run to government as their source of sustenance. Government will provide for us. Will care for our sicknesses our education our protection our prosperity our security. This what the various gods of Egypt or Greece or Babylon promised the people if your pray to them and sacrifice to them.

But look around you and the world headlines.

The oil is not flowing and the money is drying up.  The Euphrates is drying up. Babylon is in danger of falling.

Money is credit flows.  I system of debt creation of 'I owe you's" where I pay you and someone pays me. That is the flow. If someone stops paying someone stops earning.  Because money is created as debt on a banks balance sheet.  And the world is filled with unpayable debt. The big debt default is coming...the money flow will dry up.

The prosperity of a nation is directly tied to the amount of available energy available for industry and households.  Stop the energy flow or restrict the energy flow and recession leads to depression.

The Straits of Hormuz are closed. 20% of the world's oil has stopped flowing. The supply of diesel is getting more restricted, the trucks are not delivering, the ships are not shipping the goods are not arriving. oil refineries are being destroyed. Oil wells are collapsing. The oil wealth that has financed international Islam is drying up. Europe is dying from lack of cheap energy.

The government have promised people free housing, free education, free health care, pensions....but those promises need a flow of taxes but the taxes are eaten up with rising debt payments and declining tax revenue so the flow of government promises to angry citizens is starting riots in the streets from broken promises.  That is how the "social contract" between citizen and state fractures and breaks down into riots and disobedience.

Look around you. The river of Euphrates of abundance and fruitfulness in drying up.  And with it the walls of Babylon are falling.

But included in Jeremiah's prophecy in a clay jar in the dry riverbed we can now read the other part of the prophecy directed to the people of Zion and their part in bringing down Babylon. And the church is only now finding out about it because they never expected to be around when this great tribulation hits Mystery Babylon. They thought they would be gone in the rapture. But here as the Euphrates of international abundance dries up they can now read the rest of the prophecy from the Lord through Jeremiah and now revealed.....

Jer 51:19  The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all things: and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: the LORD of hosts is his name.

Jer 51:20  Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms;

Jer 51:21  And with thee will I break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with thee will I break in pieces the chariot and his rider;

Jer 51:24  And I will render unto Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, saith the LORD.

The Church will prevail against the gates of Babel (hell). We are God's weapons of war to bring down Mystery Babylon, release the captives and build a New Jerusalem.
